The 1920’s were a time of high drama and high contrast. From the heroic return of veterans from the largest scale war mankind had ever known to the burgeoning Jazz scene that encouraged women to throw off overly restrictive undergarments and dance, dance, dance.

An era of women not afraid to leave their corsets at home

There are two things I believe in 1) Champagne and 2) every era of fashion will eventually come back or influence current trends. Some looks are too cute, fabulous and wearable to let sit in the cupboard after they were all the rage.

Today we have a look at some bygone style eras and show you how to wear the iconic looks today. Dust off your bell bottoms, sweetheart necklines and floral accessories it’s time for a fashion montage. – Bec

The 70’s was one of the GREATEST decades in our modern history. It was the movement era where people really truly started standing up for their rights and the rights of others. Women were liberated in most western countries (this started in the early 60’s), The Vietnam War came to an end (1975) and in its long fight caused much controversy and protest, Margaret Thatcher was elected Prime Minister of England (the first female leader for the country), Richard Nixon resigned due to the ‘Watergate’ scandal & plenty more.

In this time fashion was not only the clothes on your back, It was a statement of who you were and what you believed in! Women started wearing more racy clothes exposing more of themselves than ever before, hippies started wearing clothes that were fashionable AND environmentally cool (hemp, ladies and gentlemen, hemp) and business women started wearing pant-suits that were rivalling their male counterparts. Women had sex appeal and smarts and certainly were able to show that through their threads.

There is one pretty standard reaction when you tell people you are from Perth they make the very common joke that is a play on the initials of the state WA or “Wait awhile”. Most Australians get a great deal of amusement from telling you that  you’ve come from 1974. It is true, to some extent, that we often have to wait for trends to get here but there are a number of excellent designers who are either based in or originally from Western Australia. They are helping WA break down it’s reputation for wearing thongs to formal occasions.

Here are a few of my favourites:

ae’lkemi specialise in beautiful fabrics and some of the most floaty feminine dresses I’ve ever seen, I love the Jungle Fever collection out now.

Anna & Boy make swimwear and some really fun resort wear, I love the colours used and the bold designs.

Nookie manages to combine colours and prints to create some really great casual pieces in beautiful fabrics and flattering cuts.

Poppy Lissiman

Poppy Lissiman not only makes great casuals but also designs awesome accessories, the styles and colours are fresh and luscious.

Wheels and Dollbaby

Wheels and Dollbaby are a little harder edged, a little more rock chick. I love the “Clothes to snare a millionaire” ethos. Stores are located in Sydney and Perth.

Tarvydas

Tarvydas make so many beautiful dresses in each of it’s collections it’s hard to choose just one, celebrity fans of the line include Emma Watson (Harry Potter) and Rihanna.

Aurelio Costarella

Aurelio Costarello is another Perth designer specialising in beautiful dresses and flattering cuts. Costarello’s most recent collection included neutral earth tones and some great full length dresses.

So there are some of the exciting things coming out of Perth. Come on over and shop, I promise I’ll carry your bags!
