I am currently packing up so I have my whole life in a bunch of boxes in my lounge room waiting to be picked up in a couple of days. That includes my clothes so I have had to make a lot of hard decisions about which items to keep out.

I am limited by the amount I can pack into a large suitcase (23kgs) and hand luggage. Here is the list of items kept out:

  • 1 long jacket
  • 1 short/ cropped jacket
  • 1 shrug/ cardigan
  • 2 pairs of black pants
  • 1 long black skirt
  • 3 pairs of black tights
  • 2 pairs of jeans
  • 3 shirts
  • 2 “work” dresses
  • 2 party dresses (I have a bunch of birthday parties coming up just before I leave – I turn 30 in about 2 weeks)
  • 1 large scarf
  • 1 pair of heels
  • 1 pair of wedges
  • 1 pair of flats
  • 1 pair of boots
  • 1 pair of thongs

I was pretty proud of the way I was able to keep some flexibility in my wardrobe while respecting baggage limits. In fact the whole exercise made me realise how large my wardrobe actually is compared to the clothes that get a regular work out.

If you had to live with a basic wardrobe for a few weeks (eg while travelling) what are the items you couldn’t live without?
