Everybody’s look changes over time, from massive overhauls to subtle shifts the way we look is constantly evolving. Today we are going to share the way our tastes and styles have changed and what influences have prompted this.

Bec

I used to wear black a lot, I think I wore black every single day during my early 20’s along with huge oversized clothes and patterns that highlighted my size. For work I would wear a pair of black trousers with a red or purple shirt. I rarely wore dresses and possibly owned one pair of heels and had three pairs of shoes in total. Even my handbag (just the one!) was black. It is incredible to me now looking back to think how rarely a print or a different colour worked its way into my wardrobe. I was waiting until I was pretty (which in my head meant skinny) to buy nice things, I thought I would seem ridiculous if I bought a nice dress or pretty shoes, that people would think less of me because I was trying to hide the fact I was over weight.

The big thing that changed for me was that I forgave myself for being imperfect. I’m not saying I stopped caring about being healthy and fitter, because I do still care about that, but it did mean I stopped punishing myself for being fat by hiding myself under layers and wearing poorly fitting clothes. This commitment to looking as good as I can given who I am right now lead to a style that is probably best described as feminine and colourful. I wear colours and pattern every day and while black still features in my wardrobe I make sure I break it up with accessories and prints as much as possible.

Happy Monday Morning Everyone!

Firstly we would like to send our apologies for the lack of posts over the weekend. There was a bit of a communication gap when one of our computers decided to completely freak out! So we should be back to normal this week/weekend ~ Amy, Bec & Caitlyn.

A little reminder of the Style Challenge presented to us:

Hi guys,

I am looking to add some more colour to my wardrobe but all I can find at the shops are florals and prints. I like bold colours but I don’t like dots or cutesy things.

I’m happiest in my black skinny jeans or shorts and tights with a t-shirt and maybe some accessories. I love owls, Smosh (Youtube) and everything Harry Potter or Disney but I struggle to find things that show my personality that are not too girly. I want try some new types of shoe (at the moment I live in sneakers and school shoes) but I don’t really like wearing heels.

Do you think you can help me out?

Rach

Now continuing on from last weeks Style Challenge here is Amy’s Response to Rach’s question.

Another style challenge, this time from Bec’s sister Rachel (age 15):

Hi guys,

Bec’s answer

Rach,

My approach was to not to eliminate black from your wardrobe but to up the ante when it comes to bright accessories and to use statement shirts with bright colours to express who you are. I have tried to make sure that the outfits keep your basic style in mind but broaden your colour palette quite drastically.

I want you to try some bright pink too, don’t think “eww pink is for babies” think rock chic instead. Bold colours and quirky choices help keep the look unique but stop it from becoming a cliché or making it look like you are trying too hard. You can use colour and cut to hide those areas you are less confident about. Using contrasting layers will be feminine without being too girly.

Try some skinny denim in colours other than black and think about navy shorts, they are as versatile as black but add interest. Try a funky wedge heel as well, you may need to practice but it will make your legs look even longer and help you tower over the n00bs.

I’ll love you forever even if you wear potato sacks but I hope the message you get from this is that you are awesome and your clothes should say it loud enough for everyone to hear.

Got some tips for how to get out of a style rut? Too much black in your wardrobe? Share it with us in the comments.
